Infection control at nursing care sites

Avance is a long-term care health facility that supports the independence of the elderly who have left the hospital and encourages home rehabilitation. The facility is utilizing Nikkiso’s health care products as infection control measure. The Director, Mr. Yukihiko Orime, says, “The decisive factor that led us to introduce these products were the effects based on evidence.”

“Every day, an air of trepidation hung over our facility,” Mr. Yukihiko Orime, the Director of Avance, a long-term care health facility, located in Minami-Ikebukuro, says while recalling the threat of the new coronavirus, which explosively spread last year. A long-term care health facility (hereinafter, health facility) offers support for the independence of the elderly who need nursing care so that they can return to their homes. An elderly person who has left a medical facility is admitted to a health facility for a certain period to receive rehabilitation, nursing, and nursing care.

“In Japan, along with the increasing aging population, expectations for the health facilities are also rising,” says Mr. Orime. The back- ground to this is a steep rise in medical expenses. Over 43 trillion yen of medical expenses are one of the factors contributing to the pressure on the nation’s finances. The health facilities that succeed in sending the healthy elderly to their homes are expected to provide clues about how to reduce medical expenses.

“In the wake of the recent coronavirus crisis, we have become more aware of our role than ever before, because if a resident gets infected, their home rehabilitation will be delayed and the reduction in medical expenses will be the farthest thing from our mind.”

Then, Mr. Orime advocated three slogans.
Firstly, ensure staff members are not infected. Secondly, ensure residents are not infected, and thirdly, even if a resident gets infected, promptly handle the situation and resume business. He repeatedly called on the staff to follow these slogans.

Expectations for the evidence- based Nikkiso products

Under the first state-of-emergency declaration, Aeropure, an air disinfector and deodorizer, was installed in the family meeting room. Mr. Orime was originally working as a cardiac surgeon, and so he was cautious about introducing healthcare products. The decisive factor was the disinfection function based on scientific grounds.

“The world is full of products that are not fully verified by tests while claiming ‘virus removal’ and those that are low in practicality and effective only under certain conditions. On the other hand, Nikkiso’s Aeropure is equipped with the base technology developed by a Nobel Prize awarded professor in Physics, and is a product fully incorporating Japanese expertise. It was also reassuring that Aeropure has been endorsed by reputable research institutions and test laboratories.”

Our measures have been successful and up to March 2021, we have maintained zero infection cases.

“When we consider the current situation, the probability of eradicating the new coronavirus is very low. What we can do now is to gain the proper knowledge and prepare for infection. Products like Aeropure will cast aray of hope on a future society that is symbiotic with the new coronavirus.”
